Program Description

The Bachelor of Psychology with Psychotherapy and Counselling offered in cooperation with the School of Psychology and Humanities and with the contribution of Faculty of Health, Social Work and Sport of University of Central Lancashire, the great international University of the North of England. The Programme is the first undergraduate psychology program specializing in counseling and psychotherapy ever offered in Greece.

Bachelor of Psychology with Psychotherapy and Counselling

If you wish to study Psychology and have a particular interest in psychotherapy and counselling, then the Bachelor of Psychology with Psychotherapy and Counselling is a pioneering degree, which combines these main elements. By studying in this programme you will cover the upcoming changes at European level in the field of Psychotherapy and in the profession of Psychotherapist. At the same time, combined with a Master’s degree of your choice, will gain triple specialisation.

If you are strong listeners, with strong elements of empathy and if you wish to help others to understand and manage problems then this program is ideal for you. You will graduate with excellent observation, analysis, critical thinking and people management skills – elements that employers are particularly looking for.

 

Among other things, the Bachelor of Psychology with Psychotherapy and Counselling covers:

  • The theory and findings governing the science of Psychology and the study of people’s behaviour.
  • The theory and the techniques that underlie the art of Psychotherapy and Counselling,
  • The development of skills as defined by the British Psychological Association (BPS) as essential skills necessary for the Psychology graduate.

The main features of the programme are:

  • Recognized by the Department for the Implementation of European Legislation (ATEΕN) (formerly SAEP) as Equivalent (Professional Equivalence) of the Psychology degrees of public universities.
  • Issuance of a License to Practice as a Psychologist in Greece.
  • Acquisition Degree in Psychology specialising in Psychotherapy & Counselling.
  • Registration in the most important European Association in this field, the British Psychological Association (under the Individual Basis procedure).
  • Ability to subscribe to the Association of Greek Psychologists (SEPS) (after obtaining a Master’s degree in Psychology).
  • Applied program by 250 hours education in the dominant Psychotherapeutic approaches and use of the ICPS one-way mirror psychotherapy workshop.
  • Guaranteed continuation of studies in Postgraduate Programmes of Study Universities abroad or in the Postgraduate degrees offered by ICPS in Greece.
  • Secured practical training, at least 200 hours, in private and public sector organisations, in accordance with the provisions of the legislation (Law 4763/2020, Law 5006/2022).
  • Specialised courses and practical knowledge in areas of applied psychology, especially in psychotherapy and counselling.
  • Courses aimed at formation of professional identity of students, already from the first year of study.
  • Teacher Team with extensive professional experience in their teaching subjects, as well as high-level studies and research activity.

 

Registration Criteria:

  • High school diploma.
  • Good knowledge of English is desirable. You will study in Greek, but knowledge of English is helpful for studying the literature.
  • Good grade of high school diploma.
  • Assessment of study intention by a Study Advisor
  • Successful Academic Interview, if the Academic Advisor deems it necessary.

 

The Bachelor of Psychology with Psychotherapy and Counselling programme has a duration of three years. Upon completion of the programme, you can obtain recognition of the degree from the ATEEN (formerly SAEP). You can then be issued with a License to Practice as a Psychologist in Greece. Following the actions and the Panhellenic Association of Recognized Collegesthe identification process has been shortened considerably compared to the recent past. In less than two months, you will have received your degree recognition.

PS1010 – Methods and Applications of Psychological Research

In this section, you will learn about the importance of scientific research within the subject of psychology. You will become familiar with a range of research methods, including observational techniques and group comparisons. You will learn how to conduct research in a range of different areas and how to transfer these findings to a range of different audiences.

PS1020 – Introduction to Developmental & Social Psychology Ψυχολογία

This section is an introduction to developmental and social psychology. You will gain knowledge and understanding of a range of topics including Piaget’s theory, moral development, conformity, obedience, development during adolescence and life and prosocial behaviour.

PS1030 – Introduction to Psychobiology & Cognitive Psychology

This module will introduce you to the physiological systems that underpin behaviour, based on the perception and processing of human information. It will also allow you to explore the explanation of behaviour in terms of physiological systems and neural structures.

PS1050 – The Profession of Psychologist

The module aims to introduce you to the ethical and moral practice of psychology and to begin a career planning process, either as a psychologist or in another career that uses the knowledge and skills developed in the psychology degree.

CG1005 – Introduction to Mental Health and Wellbeing

The aims of this module are to introduce students to a range of contemporary issues and challenges in mental health, such as psychopathology, diagnosis, co-morbidity, stigma, carer support, cultural differences, chronic illness etc., as well as an understanding of the characteristics and methods of achieving mental wellbeing.

CG1030 – Basic Issues in Counselling & Psychotherapy

In this module, expertise in three basic approaches to psychotherapy and counselling is developed: psychoanalysis & psychodynamics, cognitive-behavioural and person-centred approaches. In addition, individual versus group therapy, multiculturalism, supervision, couples therapy, research in psychotherapy and more are explored.

PS2010 – Research Methods 1: Design & Quantitative Analysis

The aim of this module is to develop students’ knowledge and experience of psychological research methods, with a focus on quantitative research. Teaching covers a range of research designs and methods (e.g. experimental, observational and self-report), as well as quantitative analysis used in psychology, such as ANOVA and multiple regression.

PS2020 – Social & Developmental Psychology

This section covers in detail the areas of theory and research in contemporary social and developmental psychology. You will consider a range of topics to develop your understanding and knowledge of social psychology such as performance, social cognition and aggression and developmental psychology such as language development, attachment and attachment theory.

PS2030 – Cognitive and Biological Psychology

This module incorporates cognitive psychology, which examines fundamental aspects of human cognition, including reasoning and problem solving, as well as visual perceptual processes, and physiological psychology, which discusses fundamental areas such as the study of the brain, the causality of behaviour and more

PS2050 – Qualitative Research in Psychology

This section covers basic concepts and methodologies related to a variety of data collection and qualitative analysis techniques used in psychological research. The processes of focus groups and interviews are discussed in depth, and training is provided in techniques such as the phenomenological method, thematic analysis and discourse analysis.

CG2006 – New Horizons in Counselling & Psychotherapy

Neuroscience and psychotherapy intersect in this module, which is one of the most research-based in contemporary psychology studies. The relationship between the Autonomic Nervous System and the “Tolerance Window” is explored in depth, the role of neuroplasticity in the reliability of psychotherapy and counselling, improving therapist facilitation through understanding its inextricable link to brain function, etc.

CG2010 – Intermediate Counselling Skills in Practice

This module aims to further develop skills in counselling and psychotherapy through experiential exercises and workshops based on the Pluralistic Approach. At the same time, self-assessment skills are developed and emphasis is placed on the ethical boundaries and ethical rules surrounding the use of counselling and psychotherapy methods.

PS3025 – Brain, Treatments & Behaviour

In this section the focus is on the field of psychopharmacology, with particular emphasis on the study of the usually “abusive” drugs and chemical treatments used for psychiatric disorders. The main topics are approached holistically from historical, biological, neurochemical and psychological perspectives. Dependence on heroin, alcohol, cannabis, stimulants and hallucinogens is also studied in the context of the module.

CG3006 – Personal Burning

This section is highly experiential. It aims to understand the dynamics within the groups and to understand the
the personal attitude of each team member. The experiential exercises and the personal development process aim at the self-awareness of the future psychologist and the development of self-reflection and self-evaluation skills.

CG3015 – Short Interventions in Therapy

This module is one of the most interesting of the training in psychotherapy and counselling. It focuses on both understanding and developing the skills necessary to practice brief therapy for a range of mental health challenges. Through workshops implementing therapies such as Solution-Focused, Pluralistic Approach and others, you are trained in real-time and develop an expanded skill base as well as knowledge for the next steps in psychotherapy.

PS3070 – Practical Training in Psychology (Psychotherapy & Counselling)

The internship module gives students direct contact with the subject in real working conditions. The minimum number of hours of placement to be completed is 200 and the opportunity is offered to undertake placements in mental health focused organisations in the wider public and private sector.

PS3900 – Research Degree in Psychology

The research thesis provides you with the opportunity to conduct empirical research, under the supervision of a qualified supervisor, thus combining the knowledge you gain from studying the literature with data collected from real life and applying your knowledge of research design and interpretation of results.
