We offer this specialized Master’s Degree Programme in Psychosexual Therapy in cooperation with the University of Central Lancashire, the great international public university of the north of England. The Programme is one of the few Postgraduate Psychosexual Therapy degrees in England and the the only Master’s degree in this specialty in Greece!
The Master has received “Approval” by the UK’s competent accreditation body for Psychosexual Health Programmes and Professionals, “College of Sexual and Relationship Therapists” and is the only Master’s degree in the UK to carry this recognition/certification.
Master of Psychosexual Therapy
Psychosexual Therapy is one of the newest and rapidly evolving therapies worldwide. A large number of professionals, including psychologists, physicians, nurses, social workers and specialists with studies in related disciplines, are showing a keen interest in this specialization. The World Health Organization (WHO, 2002) defines sexual health as ¨a state of physical, emotional, mental and social well-being in relation to sexuality¨. Psychosexual disorders, therefore, often prevent a person from having a balanced sex life, with the causes varying.
The Master’s Degree in Psychosexual Therapy, is designed especially to develop the skills required for the application of the principles and knowledge of psychology, in sexual health-related environments, sexual disorders, as well as the interpersonal relationships. During the study process, students will be equipped with knowledge regarding the principles of psychosexual therapy and the Application of these in a practical therapeutic environment.
Among other things it covers:
- The theory and findings underlying its application psycho-bio-medical model in Psychosexual Therapy.
- Topics anatomy, physiology, pathology and the treatment of sexual function/dysfunction.
- Human sexual anatomy, gender identities and the cycle of sexual response.
- Methodological and therapeutic approaches to interpersonal relationships with emphasis on the role of Cognitive-Behavioural, Psychodynamic, Systemic and Person-centred approaches.
- Clinical interventions for the treatment of psychosexual disorders.
- Critical evaluation theories and findings.
- Therapeutic protocols applicable to persons with criminal sexual behaviour with the aim of supporting them.
- Applied skills the mental health professional dealing with psychosexual disorders.
- Ethical and other professional issues.
Other important features of the project are:
- Recognized by the Department for the Implementation of European Legislation (ATEΕN) (formerly known as the SACP). It is Equivalent (Professional Equivalence) of Postgraduate students of public universities.
- A multidisciplinary team of trainers, with experience in psychosexual health and treatment, and certified from the European Society of Counselling, the European Society for Psychotherapy, but also the European Society of Sexual Medicine.
- Mandatory practical training 120 hours, in private and public sector organisations or with professionals certified sexual health therapists. The internship is conducted in accordance with the provisions of the legislation (Law 4763/2020, Law 5006/2022) with supervision provided by the College.
- Mandatory 50 hours of personal therapy with a qualified psychosexual health therapist, approved by ICPS.
- Ninety (90) ECTS (18 months normal duration). It is available both in an intensive 12-month format and in a part-time 24-month format.
- Academic assessment: Variety of methods including assignments, presentations, self-evaluation and personal development reports, role play etc.
Registration Criteria:
- University degree, preferably in Psychology or a related discipline (e.g. medicine, nursing, social work, sociology, etc.). Preference will be given to those who have completed training in counselling/psychotherapy.
- Good knowledge of English for the study of the bibliography
- Those who have completed a research thesis during their undergraduate studies have a head start.
- Assessment of study intention by a Study Advisor.
- Successful academic interview and if necessary, psychometric assessment.
